Banking on Climate Chaos 2025
Rainforest Action Network’s 16th annual Banking on Climate Chaos report covers the world’s top 65 banks’ lending and underwriting to over 2,700 fossil fuel companies.
Banking on Climate Chaos (BOCC) is a project led by Rainforest Action Network and co-authored by BankTrack, the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development, Indigenous Environmental Network, Oil Change International, Reclaim Finance, Sierra Club, and Urgewald. It has been endorsed by 480 organizations in 69 countries. It has frequently been cited by world-renowned leaders such as Bill McKibben, Greta Thunberg, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, and Sheldon Whitehouse to urge financial institutions to stop investing in risky fossil fuel projects around the globe that contribute to climate change.
The design process for completing this report usually takes 4 to 6 months while supplemental collateral and promotion extends throughout the entire year. The design challenge rests on communicating how financial data contributes to the scale of climate change. The creative process is largely informed by preliminary data, presented as pollution or emission-themed infographics, while the report’s overall aesthetic is developed early on, often expressed through moodboards and supplemental visuals and imagery that bring wider context to climate change to each page.
